Date Night
Tonight Katie and I went on a date. It was great. Emmie and Gareth babysat their younger siblings and we walked to downtown Jackson for the Vintage Art and Music Festival. Live music, artisan crafts, food trucks. . . it was so wonderful. We had pizza and walked and talked and even danced a bit. I saw an artist who had a stack of books labeled “Pay what you want” which is absolutely my kind of deal. They were her grandmother’s books and she clearly didn’t know anything about their value — she had first editions of Laddie and Girl of the Timberlost by Gene Stretton-Porter. They weren’t in great shape but still. She said she’s take $1 for each but I couldn’t do that. We paid her $10 a piece, and that was a steal, along with a book of poetry and a history of California as told by the Catholic missions. Basically, the perfect date for an English major homeschool mom and Theology major turned poet.
Three Quarters Time
Sometimes we get lost
In the busyness of life
And forget all the things
That we started out loving
And it's easy to lose
Sight of all that you have
When morning to dusk
Is made up of giving
But every once in a while
We can sneak away
Just you and I
And make space for living
Listen to the music
The rythym and rhyme
And I'll ask you to dance
If by any chance
They play it in three quarters time
The hot springtime sun
Can't compare to the heat
I still feel each time
You look at me
It's hard to imagine
After all of these years
After all of the pains
The tiredness and tears
That we're still just kids
That you still hold my hand
That old books and pizza
Are still our promised land
Listen to the music
The rythym and rhyme
And I'll ask you to dance
If by any chance
They play it in three quarters time
One two three, one two three
Over and over again
It's like the perichoresis
Your my woman and I am your man
Listen to the music
The rythym and rhyme
And I'll ask you to dance
If by any chance
They play it in three quarters timeAlmighty God, I thank you that you made us not to be alone but rather to love, to laugh, and to dance together as you do in the perichoresis of your Trinity. Blessed be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
